Kyle, S.D. -- Kirby Tilsen, the lovable Tanka mascot, was wounded while illicitly chasing cars in her family's driveway Sept. 26. According to eyewitness reports, Kirby was bouncing around a moving vehicle, hoping she could beg a ride, when she slipped and fell in the gravel behind a tire.

There were no internal injuries, but she did sustain wounds on her front left paw as well as nearly tearing off the padding of her left foot. She also lost a lot of blood.

After emergency surgery and two days in intensive care, Kirby gingerly began limping around and wanting to get back out in the woods to run in the remote South Dakota canyon near Rapid City where she lives with her family. While Kirby technically qualifies as a house hound, she lives for sniffing out the minks, mountain lions and bighorn sheep that roam her territory.

Kirby is healing quickly now and is expected to make a full recovery. Plus she's pretty hacked off about the less-than-fashionable collar she has to wear during her recovery. However, it remains to be seen if she has learned her lesson about chasing cars. (Her family certainly has.)
