A new Subway sandwich shop opened its doors Sept. 23 to long lines of eager customers in Tanka's hometown of Kyle, S.D. The crowds, who flocked to taste the freshly made subs, welcomed the new franchise. (We had to wait until the rush of customers thinned out before we could take some photos.)

It is the first national chain restaurant in our tiny town of about 900 residents on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The next closest Subway shop (or national chain restaurant of any kind) is in the town of Pine Ridge, about 50 miles away.

The new Subway, owned by Robert and Darlene Ecoffey, is the couple's second Subway outlet on the reservation. Mr. Ecoffey, who is a tribal member, is also the Bureau of Indian Affairs superintendent of the Pine Ridge Agency.

The Ecoffeys, who have lived on the Pine Ridge Reservation for many years, are making a big impact on Kyle diners with the new Subway, and helping the community with much-needed jobs.
