Our condolences, prayers and hearts go out to the Means Tiospaye (family). Russell Means entered his journey to the spirit world on Oct. 22, and we pray for his family that was left behind.

Cars in procession for Russell Means funeral.

It was my honor to know Russ, and I will always be grateful to him for what he did for our Lakota nation and all Native nations. He was a true Itanca (leader) for all Native people. He stood up for what was right, gave all of us a voice when we had none, and made Native people proud again of who we are. He will be missed and will always be remembered.

Russ was a man with a social conscience and without fear. He would stand up for the rights of all. What he leaves to us is what he said, what he did, and what he stood for, which are the actions of a true Native leader.

Today, we will be honoring and saying goodbye to him at Little Wound School in Kyle, S.D. As he enters into his next stage of the circle, we wish him a good journey. He will truly be missed by many.
