While we were in New Orleans recently for the Smoothie King franchise conference, we took a little time to visit one of our interesting retailers -- Mardi Gras Zone.

Located in the Greater Marigny-Bywater Area of New Orleans, Mardi Gras Zone isn't your typical store. Not only can you get Tanka Bar products there, but you can grab a pizza from their brick oven, shop for camping gear, buy organic food goodies and get an array of Mardi Gras beads, masks and boas.

The 7,000-square-foot store actually used to be an industrial building that manufactured Mardi Gras beads before Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc on the city in 2005. But after seeing a need for a grocery store in the area when only a few reopened, let alone a limited number of them that were open for extended hours, the store began to carry more and more food. Now the Mardi Gras Zone has aisles and aisles of food and is even going to raise chickens.

Another noteworthy fact about the store is the sign outside the front door that simply reads "MARKET" was an addition from the actor Nicolas Cage for a movie. Cage, who has been a resident of New Orleans, has shot several movies in the city.

Mardi Gras Zone is located at 2706 Royal St., New Orleans, LA. For more information Mardi Gras Zone
