Since our launch in October 2007 we have been privileged to work with outstanding retail partners. These folks are so passionate about their businesses and their customers we decided we needed to share their unique stories. If you'd like to be featured, or if you'd like to nominate a Tanka retailer for a story, please contact Jenice Johnson at

RETAILER: Huckleberry's Natural Market

LOCATION: 926 South Monroe Street, Spokane, WA 99204

PERSON INTERVIEWED: Tony Shaffer, assistant store manager

Tanka Bar: What makes your business special?

Tony Shaffer: We are local and organic. Being local is the biggest highlight about Huckleberry's and we support other local businesses, farms and produce.

Can you tell me something fun or interesting about your community/town?

TS: We are very close to nature as far as outdoor activities and recreation including skiing.

TB: Are there any other interesting comments you would want to add about your business?

TS: We have a lot of people on staff who live the organic, non-conventional lifestyle which makes our specialists very knowledgeable in their respective areas. The company is very eco-conscious and is one of the few stores that I know that composts regularly and recycles chain-wide.

Mr. Shaffer has been with Huckleberry's for seven years. He said he has stayed with company because, "They are really good about taking care of their people, promoting within and offering lots of opportunities to move up."

More Huckleberry's facts

According to the store website, "In October of 1996 Rosauers Supermarkets purchased a small South Hill grocery store called the Monroe Street Market. The Monroe Street Market was then converted to what it is today, Huckleberry's Natural Market. Huckleberry's was the first grocer in Spokane to offer natural and organic produce, seafood, meats, dairy products and pre-packaged foods."

Huckeberry's has regular tastings at the store, whether it's food, wine or coffee. And they do charitable events as well. Below is a photo from the store's Goodwill Drive in April 2010.
