Joe Rainboth over at The Black Hills Travel blog, and an administrator on the Black Hills Facebook, regularly posts photos from the area.

The Black Hills are are a small, isolated mountain range which rises from the Great Plains in western South Dakota and extends into Wyoming. Because of its dark appearance from a distance as a result of the grouping of trees, the Lakota called the area "Paha Sapa," which translates as "Black Hills." It is a popular subject for photo enthusiasts.

Here are two photos from Mr. Rainboth: one from Terry Peak just before sunset and the other of a Sharp-tailed Grouse, which he photographed while out hiking.

"It blended right in with the snowy hillside and the bark of the tree," he said.
