Since our launch in October 2007 we have been privileged to work with outstanding retail partners. These folks are so passionate about their businesses and their customers we decided we needed to share their unique stories. If you'd like to be featured, or if you'd like to nominate a Tanka retailer for a story, please contact Jenice Johnson at jenicejohnson@tankabar.com.

RETAILER: New Leaf Market

LOCATION: 1101 Fair Ave., Santa Cruz, CA 95060

PERSON INTERVIEWED: Eric Conly, assistant store manager

Q&A:

Tanka Bar: What makes your business special?

Eric Conly: We are community-owned and feature primarily organic and locally-grown produce and encourage and support sustainability. This includes farmers who have sustainable agricultural methods. If there is seafood that is harvested by net fishing that traps dolphins or anything that's not part of the catch, we don't carry it.

TB: Can you tell me something fun or interesting about your community/town?

EC: Santa Cruz is very eclectic. It's a college town. There are a lot of tourists and lots of local indie retailers and suppliers in the area. That's one of our big connections --that we feature a lot of local items.

TB: Are there any other interesting comments you would want to add about your business?

EC: Our store is socially active -- we give 10 percent back to the community to non-profits and ecological programs. Customers even get to vote on some of the community programs that we support. We have been doing it since New Leaf was founded in 1985. We are very community-oriented and have a diverse workforce that is from all over. I think we have a lot people working here who are creative outside of this job -- musicians and artists and those interested in farming.
