DIABETES: Sugar Wars:
Myth or Matter of Fact?

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, American Indian and Alaska Native adults are 2.3 times as likely as white adults to be diagnosed with diabetes. The disease is the fourth leading cause of death for American Indians and Alaska Natives, affecting about 16% of the population. People with diabetes cannot eat too many sweets, because that's how they got the disease in the first place.

Although diabetics do have to ration their refined sugar intake, it's a common misconception that eating too much sugar causes diabetes. The truth of the matter is that sugar consumption really has nothing to do with developing diabetes.

First off, there are two types of diabetes. Type I diabetics don't produce enough insulin, which is something they're born with and there's nothing they could have done to prevent it. Type II diabetics, on the other hand, produce enough insulin, but their bodies can't use it properly, but this type is a largely preventable disease.

Eating too much, whether it's refined sugar and carbs or fats or protein, leads to obesity, which is a leading factor for developing type II diabetes. A sedentary lifestyle also increases your chance of weight gain.

Having extra fat-mass makes cells insulin-resistant, which means they won't absorb insulin, the hormone that carries sugar out of the blood and into the cells. If sugar can't be stored, blood-sugar levels rise to dangerous levels that can have serious side effects on your health.

So, as you can see, eating too much sugar is NOT the cause of diabetes, eating too much in general is, though.
