CEO Karlene Hunter wins Cliff Adler 'Heart in Business' Award

NOTE: The following is a press release from the selection committee for the Cliff Adler "Heart in Business" Award, which will be given to Ms. Hunter during the Natural Products Expo West 2010 in Anaheim, CA. The award was established in 1989 to honor a member of the natural foods industry who embodies the qualities Mr. Adler, former vice president of Eden Foods, was admired for: integrity, humor, problem-solving, hard work and heart.

Please join us FRIDAY, MARCH 12, at 5 p.m. at EXPO WEST BOOTH 257 in Hall A for the presentation of the 2010 ADLER AWARD to KARLENE HUNTER, founder and CEO of Native American Natural Foods, LLC, when learning not only what Karlene Hunter has accomplished but also how she has accomplished it over the years.

Some of her achievements include:
- 1978 Instrumental in development of Oglala Lakota College, where Ms. Hunter worked and taught for 18 years.
- 1987 Assisted in development of the Lakota Fund, the first ever U.S. Dept. of Commerce Community Development Financial Institution, now a national model for creating community ownership of local businesses.
- 1996 Co-founder of Lakota Express, a direct marketing company focused primarily on fundraising for non-profits, which included raising $15 million in small contributions for the Oglala Lakota College.
- 2000 Co-founder of the Pine Ridge Area Chamber of Commerce, the first Chamber of Commerce ever on a Native American reservation.
- 2005 Launch of Native American Natural Foods, LLC, on the Pine Ridge Oglala Lakota Indian Reservation to develop and sell culturally appropriate and sustainable foods while providing opportunity, training and career paths to Native Americans.
- 2007 Chosen as South Dakota's SBA Small Business Woman of the Year.
- 2010 Tanka Bar (first product of Native American Natural Foods, LLC, launched in 2007) awarded an Editor's Choice Best New Product of the Year from Backpacker magazine.
